Hugh was born in Derbyshire, on the 19th December, 1895 (according to his attestation papers). He enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, 23rd September 1914, stating his occupation as a carpenter, and his next of kin as Ernest Stroyan, of City Hall, Vancouver, British Columbia.
He was five feet nine inches in height, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and blonde hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had three vaccination scars on his left arm, numerous warts on his right hand and a mole on the inside of his right leg near the knee.
